چکیده
The bisphosphonates comprise a class of therapeutic agents that inhibit bone resorption and are frequently used in medicine in the treatment of among others osteoporosis, skeletal metastases from solid tumours, hypercalcaemia of malignancy, multiple myeloma and Paget’s disease [1]. First synthesised in 1865 in Germany, their use had been primarily industrial as these molecules proved to be powerful inhibitors of corrosion, served as complexing agents in various industries, were added to washing powders to prevent scaling and reduced tartar formation when incorporated in toothpastes [2, 3]. The inhibitory effects of bisphosphonates on the dissolution of hydroxyapatite in vitro and bone resorption in vivo were first described by Herbert Fleisch and was quickly followed by the first clinical application of bisphosphonates in humans, when in 1969 the treatment of myositis ossificans with etidronate was described [4–6].

Bisphosphonates are currently used in metabolic disorder of bone however, there have been few studies that reviewed the role of anti-inflammatory and immune modulatory effect of this agent in in-vivo. Bisphosphonates were divided in two classes regarding the structure and mechanism, including amino and non-amino bisphosphonates. The effect of bisphosphonates on cytokine related to in-vitro wa...
متن کاملEconomic Analysis of Bisphosphonate Use after Distal Radius Fracture for Prevention of Hip Fracture
Background: Osteoporosis is a common condition among the elderly population, and is associated with an increased risk of fracture. One of the most common fragility fractures involve the distal radius, and are associated with risk of subsequent fragility fracture. Early treatment with bisphosphonates has been suggested to decrease the population hip fracture burden. However, there have been no p...
متن کاملPractice of oral and maxillofacial surgeons in bisphosphonates users in Tehran: brief report
Background: Although the treatment of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is very difficult, it can be prevented. The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge and practice of oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the treatment of bisphosphonates user patients. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study carried out by census sampling of oral and maxillofacial surgeons ...
متن کاملBisphosphonates therapy for osteoarthritis: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
High-turnover type bone metabolism derangement has been considered to be one of the major causes of osteoarthritis (OA). Bisphosphonates can attach to hydroxyapatite binding sites on bony surfaces, particularly those which are undergoing active bone resorption. To evaluate the effectiveness of bisphosphonates in OA treatment, literature databases were searched from inception to February 28, 201...
متن کاملRenal complications from bisphosphonate treatment.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW More than 10 years ago evidence emerged that bisphosphonate therapy especially in malignant bone diseases is associated with renal complications. The nature of renal injury from bisphosphonates has become clearer in recent years. RECENT FINDINGS Pamidronate can rarely cause (collapsing) focal segmental glomerular sclerosis with the nephrotic syndrome and renal insufficiency....
